72: "Dickinson, Whitman, and Patti Smith: The Healing Power of Poetry," focuses on the work of three seminal figures of American literature and popular culture. The course provides a thorough introduction to these artists and an exploration of some of their most popular and influential work. Assignments concentrate on the healing power of art in relation to grief, loss, consolation, and hope, and on your experiences and points-of-view as well as those of the poets.
73: This course explores the genre of American "nature" poetry in all its diversity and complexity, taking an historical approach, from its roots in the work of the earliest American poet, Anne Bradstreet, published in 1650, to Mary Oliver, probably the best selling living poet in America today, and Natasha Trethewey, current United States Poet Laureate. In between we'll read essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson, on "Nature" and "The Poet," and look at work by Emily Dickinson, an engaged reader of Emerson, and his contemporary. We'll read a former Oregon Poet Laureate, William Stafford, as well as early Beat poet and environmentalist, also with Oregon connections, Gary Snyder. The work of these poets asks us to examine their concern with the "green world" in relation to spirituality and religion, race, region, and sustainability. The backdrop for the course is the crisis of climate change; we'll read the new novel by Barbara Kingsolver and wrestle with issues of art and polemic, examining the possibilities for literature's contributions to consciousness and conscience.
74: Examines how U.S. and Asian societies define the meaning of globalization vis-à-vis themselves and each other using source materials from the humanities.
75: Students will learn how Chinese & Japanese society & history are reflected in art & visual culture. We will focus on four themes: belief systems, politics, nature & gender. We will investigate how arts document history & connections between nations, engage individuals in social values, reinforce systems of thought, and support as well as challenge political authority. You will gain understanding of these societies through examining key examples of painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics & other arts in relation to their cultural context. As well as traditional roots, we will look at the modern dialogue between American and Asian art and Asian and American literature.
